About Jagannath
Jagannath is derived from Jagannatha[1] a Sanskrit name used to describe a form of Krishna. The term means 'master, lord' (natha) of the 'World, Universe' (jagat).The oldest and most famous Jagannath deity is in the city of Puri, in Orissa.The Jagannath Temple in Puri is regarded as one of the four most sacred Hindu pilgrimage places in India. This form is worshiped as the abstract form of Krishna.
Significance of Rath Yatra
The chariot festival of Lord Jagannatha is celebrated every year by lakhs of people. Ratha Yatra, the Festival of Chariots of Lord Jagannatha is being celebrated since ages at Puri, Orissa. Srila Prabhupada, Founder Acharya of ISKCON ,out of his compassion, decided to celebrate this festival all over the world. Srila Prabhupada orgaised the first ratha-Yatra in 1967 in San Franciso, since then festival is celebrated all over the world.
